You know you’re an expat when…

…You start thinking in the locally currency. Ok, maybe not *fully* expat… but getting there. When I first arrived in Peru, I wouldn’t hesitate to pay 10-20 soles (~ $3-7usd) for a taxi, or s/. 20-40 for a great meal. Slowly but surely I’ve realized that it’s possible to get to pretty much anywhere in Lima for less than s/. 5 and you can eat really well for less than s/. 10 and now I find myself baulking at higher prices. Yesterday, I went shopping with a couple friends and we were looking to buy a gift for our other friend’s birthday. It was so hard to see things that carry U.S. prices or higher… a pair of Arnette sunglasses, s/. 250 ($90), a Fossil watch, s/. 350 ($127). I was literally almost cringing. This evolution has been interesting for me. I know it’s going to be incredibly painful for me when I head back to the States to visit!
